Europe Entry Requirements for Americans: 2026 Checklist

Everything Americans need before flying to Europe in 2026: ETIAS, UK ETA, passport validity rules, the 90/180 limit, and country-by-country entry requirements.

Quick answer

To visit Europe in 2026, U.S. citizens need: (1) a passport valid at least 3-6 months beyond departure, (2) an approved ETIAS for Schengen countries, (3) a UK ETA if visiting Britain, and (4) respect for the 90-days-in-180 Schengen limit. No traditional visa is needed for tourist stays under 90 days.

Updated October 2026

The 4 things you need before Europe

  • Passport — valid 3 months beyond Schengen departure (we recommend 6). Check renewal options if it expires within a year
  • ETIAS — €20 online authorization for all 29 Schengen countries (full ETIAS guide)
  • UK ETA — separate £10 authorization if your trip includes England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland (UK ETA guide)
  • 90/180 compliance — your days in Schengen are pooled; see the 90/180 rule

Passport validity rules for Europe

Schengen officially requires validity 3 months beyond your planned departure — but airlines and several countries enforce 6 months in practice. If your passport expires within 6 months of travel, renew it before you book. Full details: the 6-month passport validity rule.

At the border: what officers may ask

  • Return or onward ticket (have it on your phone)
  • Accommodation for at least the first nights
  • Proof of funds — rarely checked, but have a card/bank app ready
  • ETIAS approval is checked automatically against your passport

Insurance and other recommendations

Travel insurance covering medical costs is strongly recommended — U.S. health plans rarely cover Europe and Schengen hospitals bill non-residents. Enroll your trip free in the State Department STEP program so the embassy can reach you in an emergency.

Europe Entry Requirements for Americans: 2026 Checklist — FAQ

Do Americans need a visa for Europe in 2026?
No traditional visa — but you need ETIAS (€20, online) for Schengen countries and a UK ETA (£10) for the United Kingdom. Ireland requires neither.
Is one ETIAS valid for all of Europe?
One ETIAS covers all 29 Schengen countries. It does NOT cover the UK (needs UK ETA) or Ireland (visa-free, nothing needed).
How long can an American stay in Europe?
90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen zone combined. The UK allows up to 6 months per visit, Ireland 90 days.
What passport validity does Europe require?
Schengen rules require 3 months beyond your departure date; several carriers and countries apply 6 months. Renew early to be safe.
