ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is a mandatory online pre-travel authorization for U.S. citizens visiting the Schengen area. It is not a visa — Americans still enter visa-free — but you must hold an approved ETIAS before boarding. It costs €20, is valid for 3 years (or until your passport expires), and covers stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
What is ETIAS and who needs it?
ETIAS is the European Union's answer to the U.S. ESTA: a security screening completed online before departure. Every visa-exempt nationality needs one — including all U.S. citizens, of every age, even infants.
It applies to the Schengen area: 29 European countries including France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Greece, Portugal, the Netherlands, Iceland, and Norway. Ireland is not covered (separate rules), and the UK has its own UK ETA.
- Cost: €20 per person (free for under-18s and over-70s, though they still must apply)
- Validity: 3 years or until passport expiry — whichever comes first
- Stay allowed: up to 90 days in any 180-day period
- Processing: most applications approved within minutes; some take up to 30 days
How to apply for ETIAS — step by step
Apply at least a few days before departure. Most approvals are instant, but applications flagged for manual review can take up to 30 days — don't leave it for the airport.
- Go to the official ETIAS website (travel-europe.europa.eu) — beware of look-alike sites charging extra fees
- Fill in your passport data, personal details, travel plans, and security questions
- Pay the €20 fee by card — approval is emailed to you
- Your ETIAS is linked electronically to your passport — no printout required
ETIAS vs Schengen visa — what's the difference?
U.S. citizens remain visa-exempt — ETIAS doesn't change that. Think of it as a boarding permission, not a visa. If your trip is tourism or business under 90 days, ETIAS is all you need. Longer stays, work, or study still require a national visa from the specific country.

Common ETIAS mistakes to avoid
- Applying on an unofficial website (only travel-europe.europa.eu is official — scammers charge $80+ for the same thing)
- Using a passport that expires before or during the trip — ETIAS dies with the passport
- Assuming 90 days resets per country — it is 90 days across the WHOLE Schengen zone
- Traveling with a passport nearing the 3-month post-departure validity rule
