Yes — U.S. citizens need an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA subclass 601) to visit Australia. It's obtained only via the official AustralianETA app (AUD ~$20 service fee), usually approved within minutes, valid for 12 months with stays up to 3 months per entry. Apply at least a few days before departure.
What is the ETA subclass 601?
Australia's ETA is an electronic authorization linked to your passport — the Australian equivalent of ETIAS. U.S. citizens cannot get a visa on arrival: without an approved ETA, the airline won't let you board.
It allows tourism and business-visitor activities for up to 3 months per entry, unlimited entries during its 12-month validity.
How to apply — app only
There's no official website form — the app is mandatory. If your passport lacks an NFC chip or the scan fails, you may need an eVisitor alternative via an agent.
- Download the AustralianETA app (App Store / Google Play) — the ONLY channel
- Scan your passport's data page and the NFC chip with your phone
- Take a live face photo and answer the questions
- Pay the ~AUD 20 service fee — most approvals arrive within minutes

How long can Americans stay in Australia?
3 months per entry on the ETA. You can leave and re-enter (e.g., a side trip to New Zealand) to start a fresh 3-month period during the ETA's 12-month validity — but immigration may question repeated 'visa runs'. For longer stays, apply for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) which can allow up to 12 months.
