U.S. couples can reach most classic romantic destinations for Valentine's Day without a visa: Mexico and the entire Caribbean are visa-free, and Paris, Rome, and Lisbon need only a quick online ETIAS-style authorization (not an embassy visa). The real gatekeepers are passport validity — most destinations need 3-6 months remaining — and February travel prices, not paperwork.
Truly visa-free romance
No authorization, no eVisa — just a passport:
- Mexico — Riviera Maya, Tulum, Puerto Vallarta; 180-day entry, passport valid for duration of stay. The default last-minute romantic escape.
- Jamaica — overwater bungalows without the Maldives flight; 90 days visa-free.
- Dominican Republic — Punta Cana all-inclusives, 30 days visa-free (fill the free e-ticket form before flying).
- Bahamas — closest tropical escape to the East Coast, 90 days visa-free.
- Costa Rica — jungle + beach combos, 180 days visa-free; carry proof of onward travel.
- Argentina (Buenos Aires) — European romance without Schengen paperwork, visa-free 90 days.
Nearly visa-free: quick online authorizations
These aren't visas — they're 5-minute online approvals, but don't leave them for the airport:
- Paris / Rome / Lisbon — Schengen now requires ETIAS (~€20, valid 3 years): apply online, approval usually within minutes but allow up to 30 days. Passport must be valid 3 months beyond departure.
- London — the UK requires an ETA (~£10) since 2025; apply at least 3 days ahead.
- Australia — ETA via app (~AUD 20); not exactly a long-weekend trip, but for couples combining Valentine's with a bigger journey.

The February passport check
February travel books fast and errors are expensive. Before paying for anything non-refundable: check both passports (yes, both — the classic couple's fail is one valid and one expired) against the destination's rule on our country pages.
If a passport needs replacing, January is your last comfortable window for routine processing — see our January renewal guide. Inside 3-4 weeks, expedited options still work.
Romantic destinations where you DO need paperwork
- Brazil — Rio for Carnival season is spectacular, but Brazil requires an eVisa (~$80) since April 2025. Apply at least 2-3 weeks out.
- Egypt — pyramids + Nile cruises work on an eVisa (~$25) or visa on arrival, but build in processing time.
- Kenya/Tanzania — safari honeymoons need an eTA/eVisa; Tanzania is ~$100 for Americans.
- India — Agra (the Taj Mahal literally exists for romance) needs an e-Tourist visa — apply 1-2 weeks minimum.
Couple's departure checklist
- Both passports checked — 6+ months validity covers every destination above
- Names on tickets match passports exactly (recently married? book under the passport name)
- ETA/ETIAS confirmations saved offline on both phones
- Travel eSIM arranged — roaming charges are the least romantic surprise
- One card that doesn't mark up currency — hotel deposits and dinners in foreign currency add up
