Same-Day & Emergency Passport: Every Real Option Ranked

Lost your passport with a flight in 72 hours? Life-or-death emergency? Every legitimate same-day and 24-72h passport option, what it costs, and the scams to avoid.

Quick answer

A true same-day U.S. passport exists in exactly one scenario: a life-or-death emergency appointment at a passport agency with documented proof. For everyone else, the fastest legal paths are an urgent-travel agency appointment (14-day window, same-week pickup) or a registered courier — hand-carry services that deliver a new passport in 24-72 hours for $200-500+ on top of government fees.

The three real paths, ranked by speed

Everything else promising "same day" is either a courier (still legitimate — they're just faster logistics) or a scam.

Life-or-death emergencies

The State Department reserves true emergency appointments for immediate family (parent, child, spouse, sibling, grandparent) who is dying, has died, or has a life-threatening illness/injury abroad. You must document it: death certificate, mortuary statement, or a signed letter from the hospital/doctor on letterhead — translated if not in English.

Call the dedicated emergency line (202-647-4000, or 888-407-4747 after hours) — not the regular appointment number. Bring documents + proof of travel within 3 business days. If approved, agencies can literally print the book same-day.

Urgent travel (14-day window)

Flying within 14 days without a valid passport? You're eligible for an urgent appointment at a regional passport agency — the 26 walk-in offices in major cities (Boston, Chicago, LA, Miami, NYC, Houston, etc.). Book online or via 1-877-487-2778.

Bring: proof of travel (itinerary), the application package — DS-11 with citizenship evidence and ID for first-time, or DS-82 for eligible renewals — plus the $60 expedite fee. Appointments in high-demand cities (NYC, LA, Miami) fill weeks out; check multiple agencies, including ones a flight away — the passport is valid nationally regardless of which agency prints it.

Registered couriers: the 24-72h option

Couriers are private companies hand-carrying your application to an agency daily — they're registered with the State Department and get agency slots normal applicants can't book. You FedEx them your packet tonight; a new passport lands back in 24-72 hours.

Cost reality: $200-500+ service fee on top of $130 book + $60 expedite + shipping both ways. For a $3,000 trip departing Friday, it's cheap insurance. For a renewal you could have mailed 8 weeks ago, it's a painful tax on procrastination — but it works.

Stick to couriers registered with the State Department — the official list is on travel.state.gov. The legit players (APVI, RushMyPassport, ItsEasy) have operated for years; anyone else promising 24-hour passports is taking your money to a mailbox.

If your passport was lost or stolen

An emergency replaces the document, not the process. You still need: DS-11 in person (lost passports can't use DS-82 renewal), DS-64 lost/stolen statement, fresh compliant photo, citizenship evidence, and ID. Couriers can walk you through assembling the packet overnight — that part is why people pay them.

What won't work

  • Showing up at an agency without an appointment — turned away, no exceptions
  • "VIP" or "concierge" services claiming inside access — only registered couriers have real capacity
  • Renewing online — online renewal is routine-only, no expedited option
  • Flying internationally on a passport card or birth certificate — books only

Same-Day & Emergency Passport: Every Real Option Ranked — FAQ

Can I really get a passport in 24 hours?
Yes — via a registered courier (they hand-deliver to agencies daily) or a life-or-death emergency appointment. Both are real, both are legal. 'Same day' specifically is only the emergency scenario.
How much does a same-day/expedited passport cost?
Government fees: $130 book + $60 expedite (+$35 execution fee for DS-11) + 1-3 day shipping ~$20. Couriers add $200-500+ service. Agency appointments cost no extra service fee — just the expedite fee.
My flight is in 5 days and I have no passport — what do I do?
Two parallel moves tonight: book an urgent agency appointment (any agency you can reach — fly there if needed) AND contact a registered courier as backup. Don't pick one — run both until one confirms.
What documents count as proof of a life-or-death emergency?
Death certificate, mortuary/funeral home statement, or a signed letter from the treating hospital or physician on letterhead — translated to English. Plus proof of travel within 3 business days.
Can I get an emergency passport for a work trip?
Not via the life-or-death track — that's family emergencies only. For business travel within 14 days, use an urgent agency appointment or a courier.
Is my old passport valid while I wait for an emergency one?
If you reported it lost/stolen, it's canceled in the system instantly — even if you find it again. Traveling on it can get you flagged at the border.
