Yes — U.S. citizens need a visa to enter Russia, and Americans are NOT eligible for Russia's unified e-Visa (the U.S. is on the 'unfriendly countries' list). You must apply for a regular tourist visa: obtain an invitation voucher from a hotel or tour operator, complete the online application, and submit through a Russian consulate or visa service. Also note: the State Department currently advises against travel to Russia.
The application process
- Get a tourist invitation/voucher — any licensed Russian hotel or tour operator issues it (often ~$20-30 through agencies)
- Complete the application at visa.kdmid.ru
- Submit your passport, photo, form, and voucher via a Russian consulate or a visa service — consulate coverage is limited, so most travelers use a service
- Processing: ~10-20 business days standard; expect ~$160-200+ in fees total
Registration after arrival
Foreign nationals must be registered within 7 working days of arrival — hotels do this automatically; for apartments/friends' places, the host must register you at a post office or migration office. Keep the registration slip until you exit.
Practical reality check
- State Department advisory is Level 4 (do not travel) — consular help inside Russia is extremely limited
- Direct U.S. flights don't exist; typical routings go via Istanbul, Dubai, or Belgrade
- U.S. credit/debit cards do NOT work inside Russia (sanctions) — bring sufficient cash and backup cards issued elsewhere
- Dual U.S.-Russian citizens are treated as Russian only — and can face exit restrictions
