Check your passport application status at the State Department's Online Passport Status System (passportstatus.state.gov) using your last name, date of birth, and last 4 SSN digits — you'll need them exactly as submitted. Allow up to 2 weeks after applying for your application to appear in the system; routine processing runs 4-6 weeks total, expedited 2-3 weeks.
The 30-second method
- Go to passportstatus.state.gov
- Enter last name, date of birth, last 4 digits of your SSN
- Read your status: Not Available → In Process → Approved → Mailed
If you applied less than ~2 weeks ago, 'Not Available' is normal — your application is still in transit to a processing center.
What each status means
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Not Available | Application not yet scanned in (or typo in your lookup) |
| In Process | Being reviewed at a processing center |
| Approved | Printed and being packaged |
| Mailed | On its way — allow ~5 days for delivery |
Cutting it close? Your escalation ladder
- 14+ days before travel: upgrade to expedite by phone if not already
- Under 14 days: call the National Passport Information Center (1-877-487-2778) — they can convert your case to an agency appointment
- Under 72 hours: a registered courier can still turn around a replacement — don't cancel the trip yet
Need your passport faster?
APVI is a State Department-registered courier that can turn around a new or renewed U.S. passport in days, not weeks.
Two tracking numbers, don't confuse them
Your USPS tracking shows the envelope arriving at the facility — it does NOT mean processing started. The 4-6 week clock begins when the center logs your application, which is what the status tool reflects.
