Passport Deadlines for Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Year Travel

Working backward from Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year departures: the real last dates for routine, expedited, and courier passport processing — plus what to do if you're already late.

Quick answer

For Christmas-week travel (Dec 20+): routine renewal deadline has passed — expedited (2-3 weeks) is your last realistic option, or a registered courier for 24-72 hour turnaround. For New Year / early-January departures, expedited still works if you submit by mid-December. November-December is the second-busiest processing period of the year, so all official estimates run long.

The honest deadlines

Official State Department times are 4-6 weeks routine and 2-3 weeks expedited — but November and December are peak season (holiday travel + spring break applications starting early). Build in a week of slack on every estimate.

If your departure is within 14 days and you have urgent international travel, you may also qualify for a passport agency appointment — but slots in December vanish within minutes of release.

Which situation are you in?

  • Have a passport, expires in 3-6 months? — Check your destination's validity rule before anything else. Most of Asia, Africa and the Middle East require 6 months remaining. Schengen needs 3 months beyond departure. Mexico, Canada, Japan: duration of stay.
  • Have a passport expiring after you return? — You're done. Book the trip, check your destination's entry rules, go enjoy the holidays.
  • Renewable by mail (DS-82)? — If you're inside the window, send it expedited with overnight return mail. See DS-11 vs DS-82 if you're unsure which form applies.
  • First passport, minor, or lost/damaged? — You're on DS-11 in person no matter what. Child passports need both parents' consent — plan around holiday schedules early.
  • Passport lost or stolen during the holidays? — Report it with DS-64 immediately, then replace with DS-11. Abroad: contact the nearest U.S. embassy — they issue emergency passports in 24-72h.

If you're already inside the window

Don't panic — but act today, not tomorrow. Every day in December costs you an option.

  • Expedited by mail — write 'EXPEDITE' on the envelope, include the $60 fee, overnight both ways. Works if you have 3+ weeks.
  • Registered courier — 24-72 hour turnaround for $290-590 + government fees. The reliable option when the calendar is against you; they're booked hard in December, so lock a slot now.
  • Passport agency appointment — free (just the $60 expedite fee) but requires proof of travel within 14 days and a same-day appointment slot. Realistically a lottery in December.
  • Travel within 14 days, life-or-death emergency — Emergency appointments exist for immediate family emergencies abroad; documentation required.

Holiday travel realities nobody plans for

  • Acceptance facilities (post offices) run reduced holiday hours — some stop taking applications Dec 24-26 and Jan 1
  • Overnight mail is NOT overnight during Christmas week — build in 3-5 days each way
  • Kids' passports: both parents must appear or provide consent — coordinating that during holiday travel is harder than the paperwork
  • Name mismatches (married name on ticket vs maiden name on passport) spike in December — book under the name on your passport
  • Your destination may be closed too — embassy visa sections shut down for local holidays; if you need a visa, apply the moment you book

The December sanity checklist

  • Passport expiration date vs destination's rule — check today
  • Visa/ETA required? Apply now — consulates run holiday skeleton crews
  • Kids traveling with one parent? Bring the other parent's notarized consent — border agents ask for it
  • Photocopy/photo of every passport stored in the cloud — makes lost-passport replacement 10x faster abroad
  • eSIM and a multi-currency card set up before departure — airport SIM kiosks and currency exchanges take a holiday markup

Passport Deadlines for Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Year Travel — FAQ

Is it too late to get a passport for Christmas travel?
Not yet, but routine processing is. Expedited (2-3 weeks) submitted by early December can still make Christmas-week departures. Under 2-3 weeks, a registered courier is the reliable path — expensive but real. After ~Dec 17, only agency appointments remain.
Can I get a passport in one day?
Yes, in limited cases: a same-day passport agency appointment (proof of travel within 14 days required, slots scarce) or an emergency appointment for life-or-death family emergencies. Some couriers offer same-day turnaround in major cities.
My passport expires in February — can I travel in December?
Depends on the destination. Mexico, Canada, and Japan only need validity for your stay — fine. Schengen needs 3 months beyond departure — cutting it very close, likely a problem by early January. Most of Asia needs 6 months — denied boarding.
Are passport offices open during the holidays?
Acceptance facilities and agencies run reduced hours around Dec 24-26 and Jan 1, and processing centers effectively pause. Add the holiday closures to any timeline you calculate — late-December submissions often don't start processing until early January.
Does holiday travel delay passport processing?
Yes — November through early January is the second-peak season (after spring). Official estimates already account for volume, but mail slowdowns around Christmas add several days each way. Overnight both directions is worth it in December.
