No — U.S. citizens don't need to arrange a visa for Dubai or anywhere in the UAE: Americans receive a free 30-day visa on arrival at the airport, stamped automatically on entry. It's extendable once for another 30 days at immigration offices. Passport needs 6+ months validity.
How entry works
Land at DXB or Abu Dhabi, walk to immigration, get stamped — done. No fee, no application, no form. The 30 days start at entry and the visa covers all seven emirates (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, etc.).
Extending and the 40-day trap
Extensions add 30 days at immigration offices or online (~AED 600-900). Overstaying costs AED 50/day (~$14) accumulated at exit — but any overstay can also flag future entries, so extend before day 30.
Rules that surprise Americans
- Some prescription meds are controlled in the UAE — check the MOHAP list and carry prescriptions
- Public intoxication and even trace alcohol outside licensed venues can mean detention
- Unpaid debts or bounced checks are criminal offenses — an exit ban can trap you
- Photography of government buildings, airports, or people without consent is restricted
Layovers
A Dubai layover under ~10 hours stays airside — no visa involved. Longer connections let you enter on the same visa-on-arrival and see the city; leave 4+ hours for re-screening.
